Death, Murder And Coins In Las Vegas—You Couldn’t Make This Up!

The Binion Hoard is ranked near the top of the list of greatest hoards ever! It’s really a heckuva fascinating story that starts with Las Vegas Horseshoe Casino owner Ted Binion, and goes on to include pretty much everything a good story needs—a lost gaming license, a mysterious, drug-induced death, possible betrayal by a best friend and a girlfriend, who were convicted of murder, sentenced to life in prison—then acquitted, then convicted and sent back to prison for stealing Binion’s fortune in silver. Yikes!

The Tragic Life Of Ted Binion

Ted Binion was the son of famed Las Vegas casino magnate Lester “Benny” Binion—a gambler and bootlegger with connections to organized crime, and a man convicted of murder and tax evasion. Ted was heavily involved in his father’s operation as casino manager. In that role, he became the face of the Horseshoe Casino where he was often spotted with pretty girls hanging on each arm, schmoozing with high rollers, and living the high life. He also became well-known as the host of the World Series of Poker tournaments hosted by the Horseshoe. Things turned sour for the younger Binion in 1998 after he lost his gambling license. Soon after, he turned up dead of a drug overdose that Las Vegas detectives later ruled was a homicide. His girlfriend Sandra Murphy and her lover Rick Tabish—his best friend—were initially charged and convicted in Binion’s death but were later granted a new trial and acquitted on the murder charges. They were later convicted, however, of attempting to steal Binion’s hoard of silver buried on his ranch located in Pahrump, about 60 miles west of Las Vegas

It was at his ranch that Binion had a 12-foot-deep concrete bunker installed somewhere on the property. The bunker was Binion’s personal vault, and contained six tons of silver bullion, Horseshoe Casino chips, paper currency, and more than 100,000 rare coins, including many Morgan and Peace  Silver Dollars—estimated to be worth between $7 million and $14 million—that were once housed in the Horseshoe vault, many in mint condition. Tabish, owner of a trucking company, and his henchmen were caught attempting to unearth the silver using an excavator and dump trucks.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • COINS FROM THE NOTORIOUS BINION HOARD – These coins were part of the notorious Binion Hoard amassed by Ted Binion, who was the casino manager of the Horseshow Casino in Las Vegas owned by father, famed Las Vegas casino magnate Lester “Benny” Binion. The younger Binion was believed to have been murdered for his collection of silver bullion, Horseshoe Casino chips, paper currency, and more than 100,000 rare coins, including many Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars—estimated to be worth between $7 million and $14 million.
  • AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar—so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan—has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878-1904 and again in 1921. Morgan’s historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings.
  • FAMOUS PEACE SILVER DOLLAR – While not produced in the same numbers as the Morgan Silver Dollar, the Peace Silver Dollar series has seen its reputation grow with each passing year. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, it features a design of Lady Liberty on the obverse and a perched eagle on the reverse. It was struck from only 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935.
  • STRUCK IN GLEAMING AMERICAN SILVER – Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars were struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver from the famous Comstock Lode. They’re also big coins measuring 38.1 mm in diameter.
  • ABOUT UNCIRCULATED TO BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED CONDITION – Each coin in your 1882–1923 Morgan/Peace Silver Dollar Binion Hoard 7-Piece Set has been certified, graded, and encapsulated by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) in grades ranging from About Uncirculated to Brilliant Uncirculated (AU–BU) condition!
  • THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING SILVER DOLLARS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence—and fewer still remain in Uncirculated condition! And despite millions of Peace Silver Dollars being struck from 1921 to 1935, most were lost in circulation or melted down in mass silver meltings. In fact, coin experts believe that only 16% of all Peace Dollars remain in existence today!
