Gorgeous, 2,000-Year-Old Greek Coin From The South Of France

A combination of factors makes this Silver Drachm struck sometime between 200 to 50 B.C. in the bustling city of Massalia during the Hellenistic Age highly desirable. First, the designs—both the reverse and obverse images are extremely interesting and quintessentially Greek. Second, the story is packed with history involving the Roman civil wars that led to Julius Caesar’s rise to power.

A Museum-Quality Coin That Beat The Odds

The obverse features the bust of Artemis facing right, and the reverse features the city name above a prowling lion. Struck more than 2,000 years ago, somehow these coins beat the odds and avoided excessive wear and melting. Moreover, despite their age each coin available here has been certified, graded, and authenticated by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in nice About Uncirculated (AU) condition. This coin is the same type that can be found on display at the Numismatic Museum of Athens, so this is your opportunity to add a museum-level specimen to your collection!

Struck In The Oldest City In France During Roman Times

You might know Massalia today as Marseilles, the oldest city in France. Founded in 754 B.C. by Greek settlers from Phocaea, Massalia was dominated in antiquity by the temple of Artemis located on a hilltop overlooking the city and its harbor. The exact location of this ancient sanctuary has been lost to the fickle nature of time. An ideal port city on the southern coast of France, Massalia eventually reached a population in excess of 50,000 and flourished as the Roman Empire expanded its territory and influence across Europe and the Mediterranean. The city chose to align with Pompey against Julius Caesar during a civil war and was absorbed into the Roman Empire following Caesar’s victory. Today, Marseilles has the third largest metropolitan area in France with a population of more than 1.8 million people and is famous for its unique culture and cuisine—especially the garlic- and saffron-flavored fish stew called bouillabaisse.
