The Peace Dollars That Might Have Been

Despite being minted from only 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935, the Peace Silver Dollar remains one of the most iconic United States coin designs. Created by Italian-born American artist Anthony de Francisci, it commemorated the Allies’ victory in World War I and the peace that followed. But did you know that this iconic, recognizable design was not the only design submitted for use on the new dollar? In addition to De Francisci, eight different artists submitted designs for consideration—including one by de Francisci’s mentor, Adolph A. Weinman, designer of the famous Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Most of the rejected designs were lost to time, but recently photos of Weinman’s Peace Dollar sketches have come to light, providing us with a glimpse of what the master sculptor envisioned for the Peace Dollar.

Officially Authorized And Licensed By The Smithsonian®

Now, more than a century since the design contest was closed and the first Peace Dollars were struck, Weinman’s unused Peace Dollar designs have been brought to life as silver and gold commemoratives officially licensed and approved by the Smithsonian®. With the support of the Smithsonian, Weinman’s rough sketches have been recreated in the format of a finished sculpt by master engraver Jody Clark, one of the coin world’s brightest rising stars. A renowned international artist, Clark was the winner of 2014 flagship Britannia collection and the designer of the critically acclaimed Queen’s Beast collection. Clark is most famous for creating the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II during his time as an engraver at Great Britain’s world-renowned Royal Mint.

Dual Ultra-High Relief Design

Knowledgeable collectors will recall that the first-year 1921 Peace Dollars were struck for just four days in late December of that year and were not released into circulation until January of 1922. These silver dollars were also struck as High Relief (HR) coins and it soon became apparent that the U.S. Mint equipment was not up to the task with the extra pressure needed to bring out the design details, rapidly breaking the dies in the process. The dies were quickly modified, and all following Peace Dollars were struck with standard relief for circulating U.S. coinage. That is NOT the case with these commemoratives! No effort was spared here, and these designs were crafted in dual Ultra-High Relief (UHR) with the highest possible level of detail. Plus, these UHR designs have been accented by an exquisite reverse proof finish. The opposite of a regular proof that features frosted details rising over mirror-like fields, a reverse proof was struck with features mirror-like details rising over frosted fields.

Flawless Proofs From Among The First Issued

Though they were not struck as legal-tender coins, the commemorative medals available here in this offer were struck in a full ounce of 99.99% pure gold. Plus, each has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70UC) condition, a distinction that means these perfectly-graded proofs have ZERO imperfections—showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended! In addition, NGC has certified that these Smithsonian One-Ounce Gold 1921 Weinman Peace Dollars are First Day of Issue (FDI) medals, meaning they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository by the release date or on the business day within 24 hours of the official release date.
