Modern Silver Reales From The House Of Money
Spanish coins were among the most widely circulated coinage in world history at the height of the conquistador era of exploration and colonization in the New World. Trade of Silver Reales and Gold Escudos lasted from the 1500s to the 1800s, and they circulated throughout Europe, the Americas, and the Far East. To celebrate the influence of Spanish coinage on numismatic history, the Royal Mint of Spain—the famous Casa de la Moneda or “House of Money”—is issuing special, modern releases of the most famous Silver Reales and Gold Escudos from colonial times. Here you can secure the Spanish 1673 Silver 8 Reales Cob Type coin struck in 27 grams of highly pure 92.5% fine Sterling silver.
Historic Re-Issue Of The Original Coin
This historic coin is a re-issue of the original coin housed in the Royal Mint of Spain’s famed Casa de la Moneda numismatic museum and is part of the mint’s Jewels of the Museum collection. This coin is based on the 1673 “Cob” type coin that was struck at the Potosi Mint and is one of the finest in the museum’s collection. The obverse bears a crown, crossed swords, water waves, and inscriptions such as “POTOSI·ANO·1673·EL·PERV” and “PLV SVI TRA” (Latin for “Plus Ultra” or “More Beyond”). The reverse displays Spain’s Coat of Arms in an octolobe, along with “CAROLUS·II·D·G·HISPANIARVM REX,” and mintmark “P.”
