World War II-Era Occupation Currency
This 100 Serbian Dinar bank note was in use during the German occupation of Serbia in 1941. It was issued by the Serbian National Bank that was under German control during World War II. Beginning in the 1920s, Serbia was an integral part of Yugoslavia, but during the war, several provinces of Yugoslavia that are part of present day Serbia came under the occupying forces of the Wehrmacht and Nazi Germany. On the obverse of this banknote is a seated woman with a sword, and on the reverse is a man with fruit, leaning on a shield with the Serbian arms, with sailboats behind.
The Nazi Occupation Of Serbia
Nazi Germany occupied Serbia in April of 1941 and set up a pro-Nazi government supervised by former Yugoslav general Milan Nedic. A controversial leader, some claimed Nedic’s actions saved millions of Serbians, while others vilify him as being responsible for thousands of Jews dying at the hands of the Nazis due to his collaboration. He was captured in Austria by British troops in late 1944 and was turned over to Yugoslav authorities on January 1, 1946. He allegedly committed suicide a month later by leaping from a prison window.
