From the Depths of the Ocean Floor Home to Your Collection: 165-Year-Old Seated Liberty Coins from the Infamous SS Republic Shipwreck

On October 18, 1865, the SS Republic departed New York on what would become her last voyage, carrying some $400,000 in gold and silver coins. A terrible storm blew in, and after a two-day struggle to save the sinking ship, it and its valuable contents plunged below the depths, never to see the light of day until it was discovered in 2003 after an arduous hunt led by Odyssey Marine Exploration Incorporated.

After a lengthy recovery effort, numismatic experts could finally inspect the recovered coins. The treasures found in the wreckage of the SS Republic may very well be among the most historically significant finds and certainly among the most fascinating of any 19th-century shipwreck.

What Was Lost is Now Found
Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc. took over 12 years to find the sunken remains of the great ship, including its valuable cargo. It was eventually discovered in the Atlantic Ocean over 1700 feet deep off the coast of Georgia.  

A Classic American Coin Design 
Designed by renowned portraitist Thomas Sully and executed by Christian Gobrecht, a US Mint Chief Engraver, the Seated Liberty Dollar features a neoclassical design reflective of America's mid-19th century tastes.

The obverse features the titular seated Liberty design, which showcases Liberty with a shield and staff and is topped by a Liberty Cap. Meanwhile, the reverse shows an eagle bearing a shield upon its breast. 

These half dollars were struck for over half a century from 1839-1891. 

The Fabled New Orleans Mint 
The Civil War Era Seated Liberty Half Dollars in this offer were struck at the historic but no longer operational New Orleans Mint, which has a fascinating history of its own.

The New Orleans Mint was the only branch Mint to be operated by three separate governing bodies: the United States of America, then the State of Louisiana after its succession from the Union, and eventually the Confederate States of America.

The famous "O" mint mark on the reverse of these coins is a living reminder of this historic mint's epic history.
