Freshly Minted in San Francisco...Low Mintage Silver Eagle Proofs Have Arrived
The San Francisco Mint has a Rich History
Opened to turn gold from the California Gold Rush and silver from the Comstock Lode into coins, The Granite Lady as it was called, was the only building within blocks to remain standing following the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906. The Mint has moved twice and has been in its current building since 1934. Unneeded and closed in 1955, it was then reopened a decade later to help solve the coin shortage of the 1960s. Since 1968, it’s been primarily tasked with producing proof coinage.
In fact, the very first Silver Eagles Proofs came from the San Francisco Mint in 1986.

How Silver Eagles Changed Everything
Though it’s hard to believe now, for a time in the United States, it was illegal to own precious metals. All the political intrigue that led up to that point provides a fascinating look at a segment of U.S. history. But it’s a long involved story, so fast forward to 1985 when President Ronald Reagan signed the Liberty Coin Act directing the U.S. Mint to strike pure, legal-tender silver bullion coins. That’s how the American Silver Eagle was born. Though he undoubtedly knew his action would have an impact, no one could have foreseen the enormous demand these coins would inspire. In fact, the coins proved to be so popular that between 1986 and 2020 over 535 million were struck. That’s well over a HALF A BILLION coins, easily making Silver Eagles the best-selling coins on the planet.
American Silver Eagles Became Incredibly Popular
As expected, the new Silver Eagle coins appealed to investors with their one troy ounce weight and 99.9% purity guaranteed by the U.S. Government. But they also turned out to be incredibly popular with collectors, not only because of the iconic design, but also because technological advances at the mint increased the availability of “proofs,” important to this story because proofs are not only the finest quality available, with sharp, raised design elements and the brilliant mirror-like background surfaces, they’re also minted in much lower quantities than mint state/bullion coins due to the extra time and effort required by the mint to provide the special handling and care that is required to achieve the exceptional quality.
Proof Mintages Must Be Limited
On a good day, proof coins can be produced at a rate of 50 to 100 an hour. Bullion coins, on the other hand, can be produced at up to 750 coins per minute. Of the more than half a billion Silver Eagles that have been minted since the coin’s introduction in 1986, less than 25-million of those have had proof finishes. The fact is, there were no proof Silver Eagles minted at all in 2009, and in 2015, 47 million Silver Eagles were minted, but only 707,518 of those were proofs. The number of proofs minted is always a small fractional percentage of the overall mintage.
For the First Time Ever, A New Silver Eagle Spreads Its Wings
For over 35 years, the Silver Eagle has featured what many consider to be one of the most striking American coin designs of all-time, with Adolph A. Weinman’s revered Walking Liberty obverse paired with the heraldic eagle reverse design created by coin legend John Mercanti, 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Minton the reverse. But in 2021, for the coin’s 35th anniversary, the U.S. Mint decided to update the coin with a beautiful new design by artist Emily Damstra, sculpted by recently retired U.S. Mint artist Michael Guadioso.

No Surprise! Collectors Crave Key Dates
Collectors covet coins that are considered “Key Dates,” dates that represent something significant in the history of that coin, like firsts, lasts, lowest mintages, new finishes and new designs. And here we are, at the start of the first-ever design change of the Silver Eagle, making 2021 a very definite Key Date in Silver Eagle history. You may see these newly designed 2021 Silver Eagles referred to as Type 2 Silver Eagles to distinguish them from the original design, now referred to as Type 1 Silver Eagles.
Collectors Also Crave the Best Quality
Collectors want the finest quality available. That’s why they covet the superior finish provided by proofs. Proofs and coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a grade of 70 representing absolute perfection, even under magnification. These are the grades most sought-after by collectors. The Silver Eagle Proofs here have been certified as flawless, Proof-70 (PF70) by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), one of the top coin-grading services in the world.
Not only that, but they’ve also been certified Ultra Cameo (UC), a designation given to coins that possess an intense frosted finish on both sides of the coin, with highly polished fields accenting the raised elements.

What’s Better than the Best?
These Silver Eagle Proofs did not just earn a perfect 70 grade, they also qualified for the desired Pedigree of First Day of Issue (FDI). The FDI Pedigree means these coins were received for grading within the same day of their release from the U.S. Mint. First Day of Issue proofs are sought-after because there are so few of them compared to the overall population. Additionally, each of these graded proofs comes encapsulated by NGC in a tamper-resistant holder, featuring an exclusive label, with a hand-signed signature, one each by artist Emily Damstra, the artist who created the new Silver Eagle reverse design, by engraver Michael Guadioso, the sculptor who engraved the new design, and by John Mercanti, the engraver who designed the original Silver Eagle reverse.
Now Here’s the Kicker!
One more thing that differentiates these Proofs–they were minted at the San Francisco Mint, denoted by their “S” mint mark. The first Type 2 Silver Eagles Proofs were released a little over a month ago from the West Point Mint. 300,000 proofs were available to buyers for a total of (wait for it) TWENTY MINUTES…before they sold out. And how many Type 2 Silver Eagles did the San Francisco Mint just release? 200,000. Guess what happened? You’re right. They sold out even faster, leaving many collectors empty-handed. Since those first proofs issued in 1986, the San Francisco Mint has minted 8,296,381 Silver Eagle Proofs, an average of 754,212 per year. This year? They’re minting a total of 200,000.
