This offer features giant Silver Bars weighing in at over 68 lbs. each as well as 6-lb “faceplates” that were carefully laser cut from full-sized Silver Bars—all of which were recovered from the British steamship SS Tilawa over 75 years after the ship was sunk to the bottom of the Indian Ocean following a tragic torpedo attack from a Japanese submarine. The Sinking of the SS Tilawa
Dubbed “The Indian Titanic” due to its size and use as a prestigious sea vessel that crisscrossed the Indian Ocean, the S.S. Tilawa was an ocean liner/freighter owned by the British India Steam Navigation Company. While in route from Bombay, India to Durban, South Africa, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese Navy’s I-29 submarine near the Seychelles Islands, on November 23, 1942, due to hostilities between the British and Japanese forces during the war. The ship carried 732 passengers, 222 crew members and 6,472 tons of cargo, including over 80 tons of 99.9% fine silver bullion (mostly in the form of silver bars) intended to be used to mint South African coins.
The actual count was 2,391 silver bars, each weighing approximately 1,118.6 ounces (69.91 lbs.)—valued at $378,000 in 1942 and valued at $43 million in 2020—all of which went down with the ship. 280 people perished in the tragedy, meeting a watery grave in the depths of the Indian Ocean. The HMS Birmingham altered its course and managed to rescue 674 people.
