Tombstone was founded in 1877 by silver prospector Ed Schieffelin, who named his claim “Tombstone” after being warned the only thing he’d find in the wilderness was his own tombstone. His discovery in southern Arizona sparked a rush of prospectors, gunmen, and settlers—including the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. By 1879, a town was established near the mines. Named Tombstone in honor of Schieffelin’s claim, it was among the last frontier boomtowns and where the Earps shot it out with the Clantons at the O.K. Corral solidifying its role as a legendary symbol of the Wild West.
