Howard Hughes Once Owned The Mine

By June 1901, Butler sold his claims to a group of Philadelphia businessmen who formed the Tonopah Mine Company of Nevada. Cleverly, Butler insisted the current miners keep working until midnight on New Year's Eve 1910 to honor their leases–a deal with a sparkle! The Tonopah Mining Company worked the claims from 1902 until 1930, halting only when silver prices tanked. But just like a stubborn prospector, mining resumed under the old leasing system until 1946, when profits dried up and the mines finally shut down for good. After a bankruptcy and several ownership changes–including a stint with Howard Hughes–the claims eventually landed in Nye County'' hands in 1992, then passed to the Town of Tonopah in 1993.
