2021 T2 American Silver Eagle 2021 T2 American Silver Eagle

These Eagles Took Off With the Stroke of a Pen
In 1986 when President Ronald Reagan signed the Liberty Coin Act allowing everyday citizens to secure pure, legal-tender American silver dollars domestically, nobody could have foreseen how incredibly popular the American Silver Eagle would become.

The coins proved to be so popular in fact, that between 1986 and 2020, over 535 million were struck. That's well over a HALF A BILLION coins, easily making them the best-selling coins on the planet.

Investors Loved Silver Eagles, but Collectors Did Too
As expected, the new Silver Eagles coins appealed to investors thanks to their one troy ounce weight and 99.9% purity guaranteed by the U.S. Government. But the coins also proved to be a hit with collectors, who anxiously looked forward to adding each year’s release for their collections. That popularity was due in large part to the iconic design. But at the same time, that popularity was energized by the increased availability of proofs, enabled by technological advances at the mint that modernized and streamlined production. Collectors love proofs because of their relative scarcity compared to circulated and non-proof coins, and also because they’re the best of the best quality.

Proofs Are the Best Quality Because…
Proofs are distinguished by sharpness of the raised elements in the design, and the brilliant mirror-like background surfaces. They don’t get that way by accident. Rather, proofs’ quality is the result of extra care taken in their mintage process with specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned planchets (blanks), and presses fitted with specially polished dies. Each proof is struck at least twice, often more than twice, giving them a glamorous shine and making the intricate details of the design pop.

Proof Quantities Are So Limited Because…
The extra time and effort required by the mint to produce proofs compared to regular coins is one of the big reasons there are far fewer proofs made each year than bullion coins. Actually, “far fewer” doesn’t really tell the story. Of the more than half a billion Silver Eagles that have been minted since the coin’s introduction in 1986, less than 25 million of those coins had proof finishes. The U.S. Mint has yet to announce a mintage limit for these new design Silver Eagle Proofs, but it’s almost certainly going to be much smaller (the stated U.S. Mint product limit is 300,000) than the 1986 First Year Silver Eagle Proofs, which had a mintage of 1,446,778 and is still a collector favorite to this day!

The Silver Eagle Obverse Design Represents American Strength and Beauty
Since its release 35 years ago, this silver dollar has earned the distinction of being one of the most respected, and most widely collected, coins in the history of the world. For good reason. Many consider the Adolph A. Weinman Walking Liberty design on the front of the Silver Eagle to be one of the most striking American coin designs of all-time, portraying the essence of America. The beloved image shows a proud Lady Liberty, walking gracefully and elegantly with hands outstretched toward the rising sun, and serves as an embodiment of American freedom, strength and unstoppable resolve.

Now There’s a New Reverse Design
Though the obverse remains essentially the same, after 35 years, the heraldic eagle reverse design by the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, John Mercanti, now designated as the Type 1 Silver Eagle design, is being replaced by a beautiful new design by artist Emily Damstra. Rich in symbolism, the new design shows an American Bald Eagle about to land, with an oak branch in its talons. Before creating the design for the Silver Eagle reverse, Emily created over 40 coin and medal designs for the Royal Canadian Mint and US Mint. To sculpt the new design, the U.S. Mint turned to retired U.S. Mint sculptor-engraver Michael Gaudioso. During his tenure at the Mint, Gaudioso sculpted over 40 coins and medals and designed seven. This new design Silver Eagle is designated as Type 2.

And There’s Something Else to Consider
During normal (non-pandemic) years, a design change or coin introduction occurs at the beginning of the year, so coins and proofs get a full 12-month release. But in 2021, for the first time ever, the Mint made a design change HALF-WAY through the year. And why is that significant? Since the new design Silver Eagles are only being released during the last half of 2021, it’s possible they’ll have one of the lowest mintages. Which could in turn make this 2021 a DOUBLE Key Date, with both a new design and a low mintage. Demand is already sky-high, but if the mintage ends up being low, on top of the new design, watch out! Collector demand could blow up to never-before-seen levels.

Collectors Covet for the Best Quality
For any collectible item, collectors want the finest quality available. That’s why coin collectors covet proofs. Proofs and coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a grade of 70 representing absolute perfection. These are the grades most sought-after by collectors. The proofs here have been certified as flawless Proof-70 (PF70) by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), or flawless Proof-70 (PR70) by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), two of the top coin-grading services in the world.

Not only that, but they’ve also been certified Ultra Cameo (UC) or Deep Cameo (DC), a designation given to coins that possess an intense frosted finish on both sides, with highly polished fields accenting the raised elements that can only be achieved early in the minting, before the dies lose their sharpness.

What’s Better than the Best?
These Silver Eagle Proofs have not only earned perfect grades, they’ve also qualified for the desired Pedigree of First Day of Issue (FDI). The FDI pedigree means these coins were received for grading on the first day of release from the mint. First Day of Issue  proofs are sought-after because they are fresh and sharp, minted early, and because there are so few of them compared to the overall population.

Hand-Signed Labels|But there’s more. Along with being the best of the best and the first of the best, each graded proof comes encapsulated with an exclusive Silver Eagles label with hand-signed signatures of three of the people that will go down in U.S. Mint history as playing critical roles in the design of the American Eagle Series: Michael Gaudioso, engraver of the new Type 2 Silver Eagle “Eagle Landing” reverse, Emily Damstra, designer of the new Silver Eagle “Eagle Landing” reverse, and the renowned John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint and designer/engraver of the original Type 1 Heraldic Eagle reverse, Elizabeth Jones, 11th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint who oversaw the launch of the Silver Eagle in 1986 and Edmund C. Moy, the 38th Mint Director of the U.S. Mint who managed the rapidly increased demand for the coins during his tenure.
