1950–1965 1 Cent–50 Cent 5-pc Set NGC MS65–MS66
Five Different Denominations, Five Key Dates
This very-difficult-to-assemble five-piece set features coins that represent key dates and mint marks in their respective series—all with coveted high grades certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) ranging from Choice Uncirculated Mint State-65 to Gem Uncirculated Mint State-66 (MS65–MS66) condition! This set consists of:
- 1951-D LINCOLN WHEAT CENT – The Wheatback reverse design ended in 1958, making it a collectors’ favorite. This Lincoln Wheatback Cent was struck in 1951 at the Denver Mint and comes graded in MS66 condition with an added Red (RD) designation that means 85% of the original color remains.
- 1950-D JEFFERSON NICKEL – Millions of Jefferson Nickels have been struck, but the key to the series is this 1950-D featuring the lowest mintage in the series. This specimen comes graded in MS66 with a “Full Steps (FS) designation that means the steps in the Monticello reverse design were struck in full.
- 1953-S ROOSEVELT DIME – This is a key date because it is struck in highly pure 90% fine silver at the San Francisco Mint, a U.S. branch mint that struck only 4% of the total silver mintage from 1946 to 1964. It has earned a high grade of MS66.
- 1963-P WASHINGTON QUARTER – This coin comes with a “Double Die Obverse (DDO) designation meaning that it was struck at the Philadelphia Mint with doubling on the obverse. In this case, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” was doubled, meaning it was struck twice. Philadelphia struck 74 million Washington Quarters in 1963—only about half the number of quarters that the Denver Mint did that year—and only a fraction feature this DDO variety. This specimen also comes in MS66 condition.
- 1965 KENNEDY HALF DOLLAR – In 1965, to help alleviate a national coin shortage caused in part by the popularity of the first commemorative issue of the Kennedy Half Dollar a year earlier, the San Francisco Mint did not strike Proof Sets. Instead, it struck Special Mint Sets, leaving off the traditional “S” mint mark. From 1965 to 1966, the coins of these sets were struck on higher-tonnage coin presses than circulation-strike coins, but they were not struck as Proofs. They are, however, easily recognized and highly coveted for their satin appearance and better-than-average strikes that used specially polished blanks. This Kennedy Half Dollar from 1965 came from a Special Mint Set and is graded in MS66 condition.
