Will There Be a 2026 Gold Eagle?

Yes. The U.S. Mint will continue its celebrated American Eagle Coin Program in 2026. The Gold Eagle remains one of the Mint’s flagship issues, offered annually in Bullion and collector formats. While the full schedule has not yet been released, it is expected that 2026 Gold Eagles will be issued in the familiar Bullion and Proof versions in both one-ounce and fractional varieties, as well as one-ounce Burnished editions.

40th Anniversary of the Gold Eagle Series

The American Gold Eagle debuted in 1986 alongside its silver counterpart as part of the U.S.’  first official bullion coin program. The series has evolved over the past four decades with new finishes and design enhancements. The Burnished finish became a collector favorite after its introduction in 2006. In 2021, the Type II reverse design refreshed the series with an updated reverse design for the first time in the series' history. The 2026 Gold Eagle celebrates 40 years of continuous production for this popular American gold series.

2026 Gold Eagle Design

The 2026 release will carry the Type II reverse design that debuted in 2021 for the series’ 35th Anniversary. The Type II design, celebrating its 5th anniversary in 2026, replaced what is known as the Family of Eagles reverse that had appeared on the series since its start.

Obverse: Lady Liberty

The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic design of a full-length Lady Liberty holding a torch and olive branch, which first appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907. It is lauded as one of the most admired designs in U.S. coinage.

Reverse: Eagle Portrait

The reverse, introduced in 2021 and sculpted by Jennie Norris, depicts a powerful close-up portrait of a bald eagle.

Laser-Engraved Dies

The 2026 Gold Eagles will be produced entirely from master dies created through laser engraving. This upgrade replaces the older hubbing process, which was slower and more prone to imperfections. It is planned that all 2026 American Eagle coins will utilize this advanced technology for every finish.

2026 Gold Eagle Finishes

While official details have not yet been released, collectors can likely expect the traditional lineup of Gold Eagles in Bullion, Proof, and Burnished formats. Proof Gold Eagles are known for their high-contrast mirror surfaces, while the Burnished editions feature a soft, matte appearance favored by collectors.
