Will There Be a 2026 Silver Eagle?
Yes. The U.S. Mint will continue its long-running American Silver Eagle program in 2026. The Silver Eagle will again be a central part of the Mint's lineup, with the series celebrating its milestone 40th anniversary. While the Mint has yet to release its 2026 product schedule, if tradition follows, collectors can likely expect Bullion, Proof, and Burnished Silver Eagles to be issued.
40th Anniversary of the Silver Eagle Series
The American Silver Eagle program debuted in 1986 in both Proof and Bullion versions, and has been issued ever since. Over its four-decade run, the series has evolved with new finishes, such as the Burnished Silver Eagle introduced in 2006, which is now a highly anticipated annual release. The series welcomed its first significant design change in 2021 when the Type II reverse design was unveiled, followed by limited-edition privy-marked Eagles in 2024 and 2025. The 2026 release will celebrate 40 years of Silver Eagles, a significant milestone for any coin series.
2026 American Silver Eagle Design
2026 also marks the fifth anniversary of the Type II design that debuted in 2021 during the 35th anniversary of the series. This new reverse design replaced the former Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, John Mercanti's, heraldic eagle reverse that had been used since the series’ beginning in 1986.
Obverse: Walking Liberty
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's "Walking Liberty," a classic design that first appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar in 1916.
Reverse: Eagle Landing
The Type II reverse by artist Emily Damstra depicts a bald eagle preparing to land, carrying an oak branch in its talons.
Laser-Engraved Dies
All 2026 American Silver Eagles will be produced using laser-engraved master dies. Replacing traditional hubbing, which is slower and more prone to imperfections, laser engraving allows the Mint to capture finer detail, improving visual clarity on every coin. This technology was used to create a Silver Eagle for the first time in 2025, making its debut on the Laser Privy Proof Silver Eagles struck at the West Point Mint. However, in 2026, all Silver Eagles will be struck using this technology, which marks a first-ever for the Mint State and Burnished finishes.
2026 American Silver Eagle Finishes
The U.S. Mint has yet to release its release schedule for the upcoming year, but collectors can likely expect the traditional annual finishes: Bullion, Proof, and Burnished.
How Pure Are 2026 Silver Eagles?
As is standard, each 2026 American Silver Eagle will contain one troy ounce of 99.9% fine silver. The coin will retain its legal tender status with a face value of one dollar and will be guaranteed by the United States government for weight and purity.
