2026 also marks the fifth anniversary of the Type II design that debuted in 2021 during the 35th anniversary of the series. This new reverse design replaced the former Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, John Mercanti's, heraldic eagle reverse that had been used since the series’ beginning in 1986.

Replacing traditional hubbing, which is slower and more prone to imperfections, laser engraving allows the Mint to capture finer detail, improving visual clarity on every coin. This technology was used to create a Silver Eagle for the first time in 2025, making its debut on the Laser Privy Proof Silver Eagles struck at the West Point Mint. However, in 2026, all Silver Eagles will be struck using this technology, which marks a first-ever for the Mint State and Burnished finishes.
