Leading up to America’s 250th birthday in 2026, the Paris Mint is celebrating 250 years of French support for the Founding Fathers by issuing a series of legal-tender coins based on historic medals they struck during the revolutionary era. This 2025 issue commemorates the 1784 Benjamin Franklin Winged Genius Medal designed by French artist Augustin Dupré and struck at the Paris Mint as a tribute to Franklin, whom Dupré admired for his scientific work on electricity and role in international diplomacy. Here we’ve secured a small allotment of incredibly limited gold and silver restrikes of a the legendary Revolutionary War medal, and they’re nearly as scarce as the priceless originals!

CREATED USING ORIGINAL 1784 DIES
To produce this coin, Paris Mint’s engraving team worked directly with the historical tools dated back to 1784. The process, started with white resin poured on the ORIGINAL dies, to create a negative mold. After pouring plaster cast into the negative mold, the detailing and removing of historical blemishes were worked into the plaster by hand. Engraving was then carried out digitally using laser scanning of the plaster, thus obtaining a new die identical to the historical medal.

HIGH RELIEF DESIGN HONORS FRANKLIN'S MANY TALENTS
The stunning High Relief design features a portrait of Ben Franklin on the obverse based on a sculpture by French artist Jean-Antoine Houdon that captures aspects of Franklin’s somewhat sly persona, which so fascinated French society during his nine years in Paris from 1776 to 1785. The reverse shows a winged Genius holding a lightning bolt in front of a temple with a lightning rod. A broken crown and scepter, symbols of the triumph of science and freedom, rest at his feet. The Latin legend “ERIPUIT COELO FULMEN SCEPTRUMQUE TYRANNIS,’ (He snatched the thunderbolt from the sky and the sceptre from the tyrants), underlines Franklin's dual scientific and political dimension.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WINGED GENIUS MEDAL
The 1784 Benjamin Franklin Winged Genius medal is one of the rarest pieces of early American history, with only a few known examples struck using both original dies before a critical reverse die failure halted production. The medal was designed by French artist Augustin Dupré and struck at the Paris Mint as a tribute to Franklin, whom Dupré admired for his scientific work on electricity and role in international diplomacy. The rarity of this prized medal is a mystery since the Paris Mint never recorded how many were made. Experts, however, estimate the number to be extremely low—rarer than a first-edition print of the Declaration of Independence! Classified as Rarity-7 or higher, these medals are seldom seen and sell for high premium when they DO become available. One such bronze medal sold for $48,000 in 2021, a testament to its historical and cultural significance. Even the Smithsonian, with a collection spanning continents and millennia, counts this medal among its most prized American pieces.
