Large Silver Pennies from the Renaissance
Struck from 1400 to 1699, the Silver Grosso coins available here were worth anywhere between 26 and 48 Dinarii during the three centuries that they were issued. The name comes from the word denaro grosso, Italian for “large penny.” Typical of the Renaissance period, the image of Madonna and Child graced these coins in poses that looked very much like the paintings of the era that depicted the baby Jesus in the Madonna’s arms.
