2022 Vatican €20 15-gm Copper St. Peter’s Basilica BU
One Of The Catholic Church’s Holiest Temples
Saint Peter’s Basilica is one of the Catholic Church’s holiest temples. Located in Vatican City, work began on the massive structure in 1506 and was not completed until 1615. It would be another 11 years before St Peter's Basilica was finally consecrated on November 18, 1626 by Pope Urban VIII. In the intervening 126 years, the Basilica featured an all-star line-up of renaissance artists and architects including Donato Bramante, Maderno, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. And, while Basilica is dedicated to Saint Peter, the “Prince of the Apostles” is nowhere to be found among the 13 colossal statues that stand atop the grand façade. At the center stands a nearly 20-foot-high statue of Christ the Redeemer. He is flanked by equally colossal statues of St. Thaddeus, St. Matthew, St. Philip, St. Thomas, St. James the Great, and St. John the Baptist on one side and St. Andrew, St. John the Evangelist, St. James the Less, St. Bartholomew, St. Simon, and St. Matthias on the other. Today, the Basilica’s impressive dome not only continues to dominate the skyline of Rome, but it also has been struck as a pure copper coin by the Vatican as part of its popular “Art and Faith” series.
The Unmistakable Dome Of St. Peter’s Basilica
