The obverse of this coin was designed by Thomas D. Rogers, Sr. and depicts the original Smithsonian Building—the “Castle” building located on the Mall in Washington, D.C.—with laurel leaves on each side with the dual dates of 1846–1996. The coin’s reverse was designed by 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint John Mercanti and depicts an allegorical goddess sitting on top of a globe. She holds the torch of knowledge in her left hand and a scroll with the words “art, history and science.” To her left an additional inscription reads, “FOR THE INCREASE AND DIFFUSION OF KNOWLEDGE.”
