A response to a request made under the Freedom of Information Act revealed that the US Mint began striking Silver Eagles at multiple facilities. This revelation came years after they began doing so, and the origin of many of the coins was lost. Those that remained in sealed monster boxes, though, could still be sourced by their serial numbers.
