Australia has an intriguing minting process and history. Before the opening of the Royal Australian Mint, Australian silver coins were solely minted from the Perth Mint, Australia's oldest mint facility.
While the Royal Australian Mint is the sole producer of circulating coins within the country today, the Perth Mint specializes in bullion coins, making it Australia’s official bullion mint, owned by the Government of Western Australia.
As a response to the large gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie, Australia opened three minting facilities: Sydney, Milbourne, and Perth to capitalize on the opportunity those reserves offered. Opening in 1899, Australia’s Perth Mint is the only surviving mint from that time period.
When Britain came off the gold standard in 1931, the Perth Mint maintained its minting process, evolving their circulating coin process, and it wasn’t until 1965 at the opening of the Royal Australian Mint that the Perth Mint had to adapt yet again as the new facility became the sole producer of circulating coinage within the country. The Perth Mint would remain under British governance until 1970 when ownership transitioned to the Government of Western Australia.
The Perth Mint’s new direction was formalized by a State Act of Parliament that saw the creation of the Gold Corporation in 1987, which gave Perth the ability to not only mint and market gold, but silver and platinum to worldwide investors and collectors.
Today, the Perth Mint is a member of elite mints whose pure gold, silver, and platinum legal tender coins are trusted and respected. An iconic silver piece is its Kookaburra Silver Coin Series and Koala Silver Coin Series. It is also the proud producer of the Lunar Gold and Silver Coin Series, an annual favorite amongst collectors.
Since 1986, the Perth Mint has made beautiful silver coins through its bullion coin program, making Australian silver coins amongst some of the most beautiful coins offered to collectors across the globe.
