The Series

The Wedged-Tail Eagle is featured in Australia the way the Bald Eagle is featured in America: as a timeless symbol of strength, national pride and Freedom. Who better to design classic imagery featuring eagles than John Mercanti? He spent a career at the U.S. Mint designing eagles for numismatic issues. No other designer captures the majesty and power of the eagle than Mr. Mercanti. The reverse design changes most, but not all years, showcasing the many moods and habitats of the Australian Wedge Tailed Eagle.

From 2014-2015, the design featured a Wedged-Tail Eagle about to land, while from 2016-2017, the design featured an Eagle upon a perch. In 2018, the design that depicted a full family of Eagles only appeared for one year before transitioning to a Wedged-Tail Eagle soaring in the sky about to snatch its prey in 2019. The design for 2020 had not yet been revealed.

The series is struck to proof quality, in a standard strike, in ultra high relief and in standard relief and in a variety of sizes. Many issues in the series enjoy limited mintages as well.

Mr. Mercanti is the most prolific and talented engraver-designer in the history of the United States. He is responsible for designing over 100 numismatic items including medals, commemoratives and circulating coinage. He was the 12th person to occupy the post of Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. To refer to him as a living legend in the field of numismatics is simply a statement of fact.

The Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle Series

Since the coin’s first appearance in 2014, Australia’s largest bird of prey, the Wedge-Tailed Eagle, has been the coin’s key feature. A symbol of Australia’s patriotism and prowess, the Wedge-Tailed Eagle is a phenomenal bird of prey that aptly represents its country. As the coin has been minted over the years, the designs have varied and have been the subject of outstanding coin artistry.

Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle Coin Designs

The Wedge-Tail Eagle is featured in Australia the way the Bald Eagle is featured in America: as a timeless symbol of strength, national pride, and freedom. Who better to design classic imagery featuring eagles than John Mercanti? He spent a career at the U.S. Mint designing eagles for numismatic issues. No other designer captures the majesty and power of the eagle quite like Mr. Mercanti. The reverse design changes most, but not all years, showcasing the many moods and habitats of the Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle.

The first design for the 2014 Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle Coin ran for two years, as did the subsequent design which ran from 2016 to 2017. Starting in 2018 the Perth Mint made the decision to bring a new Wedge Tailed Eagle design each year a new coin in the series would be minted.

From 2014 through 2018, Mercanti and Perth brought us a total of 3 designs depicting the Eagle as he is coming in for a landing 2014-2015, him sitting stoically on a branch 2016-2017, and finally the full family of Eagles (2018). The fourth and fifth designs in 2019-2020 display his decent closing in on his prey. In the sixth design for 2021, the story continues with the Wedge-Tailed Eagle gazing down on its prey, a snake grasped in its talons. The 2022 design, the seventh in the series, shows the fearsome Wedge-Tailed Eagle, beak open, emitting what one can assume is a pealing cry!

For 2023, the unique reverse design centers on the intimidating bird gracefully perched atop a tree branch, its massive wings spread. In addition, the obverse of the 2023 Wedge-Tailed Eagle has notably been updated to include the dates of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s long reign to memorialize her passing in September 2022.

The series is struck to proof quality, in a standard strike, in ultra high relief and in standard relief and in a variety of sizes. Many issues in the series enjoy limited mintages as well.

10th Anniversary 2024 Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagles

2024 marks the 10th anniversary since the first Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle debuted in 2014. The one-year-only 2024 design is the ninth John Mercanti design in the series and features a soaring Wedge-Tailed Eagle with its massive wings outstretched and surrounded by radial sunbeams.

To celebrate this milestone anniversary, on the obverse of the Proof 2024 Wedge-Tailed Eagles, you will find a miniature 2014 Wedge-Tailed Eagle design. If that’s not enough, 2024 is also the first year the Australian effigy of King Charles III will appear on the series, which had always previously used an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, and also marks the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint, which is celebrated with a “P125” privy mark!

The Perth Mint

Having produced over 100 coin and medal designs for the U.S. Mint, it only made sense to introduce Mercanti to Perth to create the first-ever U.S.-Australia collaboration. And what better of a design than a native Australian Eagle, the Wedge-tailed Eagle, to further solidify the relationship.

Beginning operations in 1899 as part of the British Royal Mint system, Australia’s Perth Mint is a recognized leader in the bullion and numismatic market today. Their technical expertise is coupled with artistic skill which together produce some of the most widely collected modern coinage on the planet.

When it comes to the Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle series, designed by John Mercanti, former United States Mint Chief Engraver, and designer of the Type 1 Silver Eagle heraldic eagle reverse, this marked the first time a former U.S. Mint employee collaborated with a foreign mint. Over the course of its issuance, not one, but six striking John Mercanti designs have appeared on the series.
