The Last King On WWII-Era Commonwealth Coins

With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, people are starting to see new coins with a king’s effigy. Elizabeth reigned for more than 70 years, so it’s been more than seven decades since a king has been featured on coins of the Commonwealth. The coins in this five-piece British Commonwealth set are dated between 1937 and 1946—key dates from the World War II era. These coins are the pocket change the people of Great Britain would have carried with them during the Nazi “Blitz” when bombs reigned down upon London during the early days of war.

The Man Who Prepared Queen Elizabeth II For The Throne

On the obverse of each coin, you’ll see the portrait of King George VI—Elizabeth’s father and the man who readied her for the throne. George is shown facing left, the opposite direction of the Queen’s effigy. According to British coin tradition, the direction that a king or queen faces changes with each new monarch. So, just as Elizabeth was always shown facing right, her son and heir, King Charles II, will be shown facing left—just like his grandfather, the last king to appear on British Commonwealth coins! The reverse of each coin depicts a crowned lion seated atop a crown holding sword and scepter.

Each of these coins was struck 50% fine silver and is 1 Shilling legal tender. Plus, each will come in nice collector grade Fine to Very Fine (F–VF) condition. Dates our choice. These coins are great for lovers of the British monarchy. Supply is limited, so act now!
