The Last Of The Red Seal Paper Currency Notes!
In 1963, the year President John F. Kennedy was tragically assassinated in Texas, the United States Treasury Department was attempting to simplify its paper currency by phasing out all but Federal Reserve Notes—including these with bright red seals. The front features the portrait of Thomas Jefferson, and the reverse features a very intricate, eye-appealing depiction of his home, Monticello. This is the first series that the $2 Legal Tender note printed with the “In God We Trust” motto.
These Hated $2 Bills Are Now Cool!
In spite of its relatively low denomination, the $2 bill is one of our nation’s most seldom-seen—or used—bills. This is due, in large part, to the Treasury Department's low production of the note; approximately 0.5% of all U.S. notes produced are $2 bills. The other reason is purely psychological—many Americans remain remarkably superstitious about spending it, which further decreases its circulation. In fact, the $2 bill is so limited in circulation that few electronic cash registers, money-changing machines, and vending machines accommodate it. Throughout the history of the $2 Note it has been shunned by retailers and banks since there was not a standard spot for it in cash registers and teller drawers. In the 1920s, it was considered a jinx to receive one, and it was not allowed in some casinos and racetracks. Even today, some retailers refuse to accept them because they think they are counterfeit or “play money.” Beginning in 1975, $2 Federal Reserve Notes were issued with a green seal and a vignette of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the back.
