Gorgeous French Gold From The 100 Years War

Here’s a rare French coin struck during the height of the 100 Years War between England and France. Though fought to determine the succession of the French throne, the 116-year-long conflict changed the course of European history and combat by igniting English and French nationalism and ending the feudal system. No longer were noble knights mounted on horseback the main components of battle as time and time again peasant foot soldiers consistently prevailed using nothing more than bows and pikes during the war that was waged off and on again from 1337 to 1453.

The French Hero Of The 100 Years War

One of the early French heroes from the war was King Charles V (1338–1380). Ascending to the throne when he was just 26 years old, Charles had served as regent since he was 20 after his father had been captured by the English at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. Hailed as “Charles the Wise,” the young king recovered much of the territory occupied by English troops and successfully reversed the military losses of his predecessors. His early death—the lingering effects of a poison attack 20 years earlier—turned the fortunes of war against France as he was succeeded by his 11-year-old son, Charles VI. Known as “Charles The Mad,” Charles VI was more famous for his mental illness and bouts of psychotic episodes than anything he accomplished as king.

Uncommonly High-Grade Coin

This gorgeous, 90% fine gold coin is a rare France F’Pied Gold struck between 1364 and 1380 during the reign of Charles V and is considered to be one of the most important coins in medieval France. What’s more, it comes certified, graded, and encapsulated by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in Choice Uncirculated Mint State-63 (MS63). It’s an exceptionally beautiful example, with a nicely-centered crisp strike obverse of the King in armor with a sword and scepter, and a nicely-centered reverse of a short cross potent over a cross fleury, slightly rotated to the right—not uncommon in hammered coins like these.

The latest population report from NGC shows a total of only 189 of these coins, with only 35 grading higher, while the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) population report shows a total of only 12 of these coins, with only three grading higher. We have only one available—and there’s no guarantee that we’ll ever be able to get more. So, act now to make this golden beauty from medieval Europe a part of your collection today!
