Last Ike Dollar In 40% Silver, 1776-1976 Bicentennial
When the Eisenhower Dollar was first introduced in 1971, it featured a stunning reverse inspired by the Apollo 11 mission patch—an American Bald Eagle landing on the surface of the moon. But in 1976, that design was changed to pay tribute to the nation’s Bicentennial. Instead of the majestic eagle, the design featured the Liberty Bell on the reverse. The moon was still there, though, tucked behind the bell. One of the things that set this coin apart was the dual dates of 1776 and 1976—something that had never been done before on a U.S. circulating coin!
Ike Dollars Celebrate America’s 200th Birthday
What’s also interesting about the dual-dated 1776–1976 Ike Dollars is that special collector’s edition of the coin struck in 1976 returned to the 40% silver composition that had been used for the series from 1971 to 1974 after which it switched to a clad composition. That’s what you have here. For the nation’s 200th birthday, a design contest was held for a one-time-only reverse design. The new design was created by 22-year-old art student Dennis Williams and depicted the Liberty Bell superimposed before an image of the moon. At the time, Williams the youngest person to ever design a U.S. coin. Each 1776-1976 Bicentennial Ike Dollar available here was struck at the San Francisco Mint and will arrive in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition. Quantities are limited, so act fast!
