1834–1839 $2.50 Gold Liberty Type I BU
Affordable Classic Gold Liberty Heads From Over 175 Years Ago!
Gold coins struck by the fledgling United States of America during its first 50 years of existence were popular—especially in Europe, where by the 1830s, the melting of U.S. gold coins was proceeding at a fever pitch. Bitter debates between Congress, the Treasury Department and southern mine owners continued for years on how to solve the problem. A compromise was finally struck in 1834 and two new coin designs were soon released—new $2.50 and $5 Quarter and Half-Eagle gold coins.
The Short-Lived Classic Liberty Head Design
Designed by William Kneass, the new “Classic Head” Liberty $2.50 Quarter Eagle featured a traditional maiden with a ribbon binding her long, curly hair. This variety omitted E PLURIBUS UNUM from the coin’s reverse. Modifications to this coin were made by Kneass and, after he suffered a stroke, by his successor, Christian Gobrecht. In 1840, a coronet and smaller head were designed to conform with the appearance of larger gold coins, bringing an end to the short-lived Classic Liberty Head design.
Amazing Brilliant Uncirculated Condition
Each coin was struck in 89.92% gold and measured 18.2 mm in diameter.
