Buffalos and Indians — Symbols of America’s Old West
Their classic designs evoke images of dusty saloons and wide open valleys. The Indian Head Cent, first unveiled in 1859, and the Buffalo Nickel introduced in 1913, are two of the “wildest” designs to appear on U.S. coinage. Americans of a certain age may remember seeing these coins as youngsters — or even getting a few as part of a weekly allowance! But many others have NEVER EVEN SEEN these vintage U.S. coins, let alone owned EVEN ONE. Now, for a limited time and while our supplies last, you can secure a quarter-pound bag of these classic coins!
- 1859–1909 INDIAN HEAD CENT: First minted in 1859, the “Indian Penny” in your collection will have a date of 1909 OR EARLIER. The coin got its nickname thanks to its design that shows Lady Liberty wearing a Native American headdress. The coin also features Miss Liberty with a beaded necklace and a hair band emblazoned with a diamond. The reverse tells the tale of this beloved coin’s Civil War heritage: the Union Shield is at the top of a wreath of oak leaves. The classic Indian Head Cent hasn’t been struck for more than 110 years, and most have worn down to nothing in circulation, or they’ve been lost or destroyed.
- 1913–1938 BUFFALO NICKEL: Designed by famed American sculptor James Earle Fraser, the Buffalo Nickel has always been one of the nation’s most popular coins. The Indian depicted on the coin is a dead ringer for Oglala Lakota Chief Iron Tail — though Fraser claimed it was a composite of three men in order to protect both the Chief’s privacy and his own artistic license. The buffalo on the reverse was modeled after Black Diamond, an American bison then on display at New York City’s Bronx Zoo. Millions of these coins were worn out in circulation. As a result, these coins are becoming more sought-after each day.
Each coin comes in Good to Very Good (G–VG) condition and the entire assortment will come with a Certificate of Authenticity and housed in a velvet pouch. As an added bonus, you’ll also receive a stone arrowhead. Only limited quantities are available, so don’t wait; order your quarter-pound bag today! Dates and mintmarks will vary.
