Take a Ride on the B&O Railroad

The Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad was America’s oldest and first common rail carrier, with its first section opening in 1830. Tom Thumb, the famous and first American-built steam locomotive, was designed just to convince B&O Railroad big wigs to use steam engines! Now you can take a step back in time and ride the rails with this iconic railroad with this ten-piece coin set!

A Pocketful of Change to Ride the Rails

This fabulous collection features the same types of coins that would have lined the pockets of passengers riding on the B&O Railroad: four Indian Head Cents, a Two-Cent Piece, two Liberty Nickels, two Buffalo Nickels and a 90% silver Barber Dime—that’s ten coins in all. It’s a whole handful of coins that would have been able to get you a ticket to almost anywhere in the country in the years following the Civil War when Americans were urged to seek their fortunes in the West and business travel was made on railroad cars, not in the First Class section of an airplane. Plus, each set comes housed in a velvet pouch — the same type of pouch some of the railroad’s passengers would have used to house their own coins. Dates vary, and condition varies between Good and Extremely Fine (G–XF) condition.

Colorful Railroad Stock Certificates

In addition, you’ll receive a six-piece set of B&O stock certificates from the 1930s, complete with a vignette of Tom Thumb! What makes these stock certificates truly unique is the fabulous colors. Each note comes in a different color — brown, olive, blue, orange, green and red — bringing up fond memories of sitting around a game of Monopoly. In fact, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad is one of the railroads that occupies a spot on the Monopoly game board! It’s the third railroad on the board and can be had for just $200 of colorful Monopoly money — get all four railroads and you’ll earn yourself $200 anytime someone lands on one of your railroads.
