This Half Dime Is NOT A Nickel

Yes, it does have a face value of 5¢, but it’s struck in highly pure 90% fine silver, and was one of the first coin denominations to roll off the presses the year the Philadelphia Mint opened its doors in 1792. Struck from 1837 to 1873, Half Dimes feature the Seated Liberty design created Christian Gobrecht, the United States Mint’s Third Chief Engraver. Gobrecht’s design shows Lady Liberty clad in a flowing dress and seated upon a rock with a Liberty shield to protect her. This classic 19th century design was used all the way to end of the half dime series.

Silver Coins That Circulated During The 1800s

Smaller than a dime at 15.5 mm, each coin will arrive in Circulated condition. Because of the small denomination, most were so heavily used in daily commerce that they just simply wore out. And because of the size, many were just plain lost. Just think, these coins could have lined the pockets of generals and infantrymen during some of the most important battles of the Civil War, greased the palms of merchants during the post-war carpetbag era, or even rode with cavalry troopers chasing Native Americans in futile pursuit across the Great Plains. Here’s your chance to get one of these vintage coins minted more than 150 years ago. Hurry: we don’t have many available, so secure yours now. Dates will vary.
