Early-Date 1879 Philadelphia Morgan Silver Dollar

First struck in 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar was one of the workhorse coins of the American Wild West. Struck in 90% silver, they’re believed to be the most widely collected and coveted Silver Dollar in U.S. history — perhaps in part because their numbers were dramatically slashed by the Pittman Act of 1918, which called for millions of Morgans to be melted. It’s believed that as few as 15% of all Morgans still exist today in any condition.

Beautifully Struck Early Date Philadelphia Mint Morgan

This 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar was struck at the original United States Mint in Philadelphia. This is the second year Morgans were stuck at the “Mother Mint.” Only coins dated 1878 were struck before it. It had a relatively high mintage compared to other dates (14.8 million), but the ravages of time have taken their toll and it can be hard to find today.

The Philadelphia Mint is known as the “Mother Mint” because all dies for branch mints are prepared there. It is also unique because with a few exceptions, Mint marks are excluded from coinage struck there. That’s because when the Mint first began striking coins, it was the only U.S. Mint and there was no need to provide a distinguishing mark to differentiate coins made there. When branch Mints were opened, they were given identifying marks or letters that served to denote their place of origin. Thus, this coin has no mint mark.

  • STRUCK IN GLEAMING AMERICAN SILVER – These Morgan Silver Dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver from the famous Comstock Lode. It’s also a big coin measuring 38.1 mm in diameter.

  • THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence – and fewer still remain in Uncirculated condition!
