Scarce Overdate—1880/9 Morgan!

The Morgan Silver Dollars available here were struck by the San Francisco Mint nearly 145 years ago in 1880 Mint. But their age is only part of the story. The real headline here is that there are remnants of a “9” shown in the “0” on the coin’s date—identified as a VAM-11 die variety by Leroy C. Van Allen and A. George Mallis in their comprehensive catalog of die varieties. Dies for Morgan Silver Dollars were often created by the Philadelphia Mint, then sent to the branch Mints. San Francisco was located 3,000 miles away on the West Coast, so shipping took a while. Was a date on a die used in 1879 by the San Francisco Mint changed to 1880? It remains a mystery.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar—so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan—has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878-1904 and again in 1921, it was the coin of America’s “Wild West” and jingled in the coin purses of gamblers, gunfighters, soldiers, and dance hall girls.
  • CLASSIC DESIGNS – Morgan’s historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. The model used for Liberty was Miss Anna Williams of Philadelphia, who Morgan declared to have the most perfect feminine profile he had ever seen.
  • UNIQUE VAM COINS – These Morgans have been identified as VAM overdate variety coins where slight differences have been used to identify specific dies that created the coins. The differences were based on extensive research on the variations in the dies used to strike silver dollars was published 44 years ago by Leroy C. Van Allen and A. George Mallis.
  • SCARCE VAM VARIETY – Based on the current Professional Coin Grading service (PCGS) population report, 190,768 1880-S Morgans have been submitted, with only 2,128 featuring this 1880/9-S overdate—a mere 1%.
  • STRUCK IN GLEAMING AMERICAN SILVER – Morgan Silver Dollars were struck in 90% silver from the famous Comstock Lode and measure 38.1 mm in diameter.
  • LEGAL TENDER SILVER DOLLAR – Morgans were $1 legal tender and struck during the heyday of America’s Wild West era where coins were overwhelmingly preferred over paper currency.
  • HIGH-GRADE UNCIRCULATED CONDITION – Your coins were certified, graded, and encapsulated by PCGS in Choice Uncirculated Mint State-64 (MS64) condition.
  • THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence—and fewer still remain in Uncirculated condition!
