Vintage New Orleans Mint Barber Half Dollars

More than a century ago, the half dollar that lined people’s pockets was the Barber Half Dollar. Struck from 1892 to 1915, the 90% silver Barber Half Dollar is a classic American design. Featuring Liberty with a triple headdress consisting of a cap, a laurel wreath, and a tiny coronet inscribed with her name, the Barber Half Dollar gains its name from designer Charles E. Barber, the United States Mint’s 6th Chief Engraver from 1880 to 1917. Barber is one of the most famous and prolific coin designers in U.S. Mint history, having designed a full range of circulating coinage in his day.

The Only U.S. Branch Mint To Have Been Run By Three Governments

Here we have a vintage Barber Silver Half-Dollars struck at the New Orleans Mint from 1892 to 1909—the only years New Orleans struck the coin. The New Orleans Mint is famous for being the only mint to have been run by three governments—the United States, the State of Louisiana, and the Confederate States. This coin circulated in commerce and will arrive in Good to Very Good (G–VG) condition. Dates will vary. Just imagine what this Half Dollar was used to buy around the Turn of the Century when the purchasing power of 50 cents was the equivalent of about $20 today!

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • ·     LEGENDARY BARBER HALF DOLLAR – The image on this coin features the Liberty Head design created by Charles E. Barber, the U.S. Mint’s 6th Chief Engraver. While Barber Half Dollars were struck from 1892 and 1915, they were struck from just 1892 to 1909 at the New Orleans Mint.
  • ·     FAMOUS “O” MINT MARK – The New Orleans Mint is famous for being the only American mint to be controlled by three different governing bodies during its lifetime. It was first governed by the United States of America, then the State of Louisiana when it seceded from the Union prior to the Civil War, and finally the Confederate States of America following the onset of the war. The United States regained possession in 1862. The famous “O” mint mark on the reverse of these coins is a living reminder of this historic mint’s epic history.
  • ·     STRUCK IN FINE SILVER – Each coin available here was struck in 12.5 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver and measures 30.6 mm in diameter.
  • ·     UNITED STATES LEGAL TENDER – These coins are 50 cents legal tender in the United States.
  • ·     GOOD TO VERY GOOD CONDITION – Your 1892–1909-O Barber Silver Half Dollar will come in nice, Good to Very Good (G–VG) condition. Dates will vary.
