The Teddy Roosevelt Inspiration Set
When President Teddy Roosevelt took office, most of the circulating coinage in the United States had not changed in years. Unsatisfied with the designs — Roosevelt specifically complained of the designs’ “atrocious hideousness” — he set about creating a new golden age of U.S. coinage. The most famous result of this is the $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, but beautiful new designs were also struck for smaller coins, including the three in this set. Here’s what you’ll receive:
- 1916–1945 Mercury Dime. One of the most classic designs in U.S. coin history is the Mercury Dime, so named for Liberty’s resemblance to the mythical god of commerce. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman on the precipice of World War I, the coin’s design was said to represent “Freedom of Thought.”
- 1916–1930 Standing Liberty Quarter. The design of Miss Liberty standing shield in hand and holding an olive branch was designed by sculptor Herman Atkins MacNeil. The coin’s reverse shows a flying eagle. The series was struck for just 15 years and was replaced in 1932 by the Washington Quarter.
- 1916–1947 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Known to many collectors as a “Walker,” the Walking Liberty Half Dollar is one of the most beautiful coins ever struck by the U.S. Mint. In fact, the coin’s obverse famously designed by Adolph A. Weinman is so iconic and beloved that it was resurrected in 1986 as the obverse for today’s Silver Eagles!
Each coin was struck in highly pure 90% fine silver and comes in nice Fine (F) condition. Dates vary. Each set comes beautifully housed in a custom holder. Were it not for Roosevelt’s inspiration, we may never have received these beautiful designs. Secure your set today!
