Key Date 1916 Mercury Dime

Struck during the second year of World War I, the 1916 Mercury Dime is considered a key date in the series. Well known for its beautiful profile of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap (often mistaken for the god Mercury, resulting in the coin's famous nickname), this coin is also a first-year issue. The series began during the First World War, and was so popular that it lasted through the second, seeing its last issue in 1945. This long career may also be due to its design, which many consider to be the most beautiful ever struck by the U.S. Mint.

What really makes this coin stand out from its peers, however, is its precious "D" mint mark of the Denver Mint. While 22,180,080 Mercury Dimes were struck in Philadelphia during 1916, and an additional 10,450,000 were struck in San Francisco, just 264,000 were struck in Denver!

A must-have for any U.S. collector, this coin is difficult to locate today, especially in Very Fine-30 (VF-30) condition. There's no telling how many of that relatively tiny mintage still exist after more than 100 years. Don't let this coin get away!
