Cripple Creek Check From The Last Great Colorado Gold Rush

On October 20, 1890, Bob Womack discovered a vein of rich ore in Poverty Gulch, Colorado (later renamed Cripple Creek after a frightened calf jumped over a fence, landed in a gully, and broke its leg). His find touched off the last great Colorado gold rush. Thousands of prospectors soon flocked to the region, and before long the famous Independence Lode was located, one of the largest gold strikes in history. In three years, the population of Cripple Creek increased from 500 to more than 10,000. In all, about $500 million worth of gold ore was dug from the Cripple Creek mine.

Artifacts From Colorado’s Last Gold Rush

Now you can take a trip back in time with one of these “Boom Town” checks that were issued from 1919 to 1921 by the city of Cripple Creek during closing days of the last Colorado Gold Rush. Each measures 8" x 3¼" and was cashed in by the Treasurer of the City of Cripple Creek. These pieces of art are quite beautiful. They feature a lovely vignette that shows a young woman dressed in a Native American costume holding a pole with a Phrygian cap on top. She is leaning comfortably on a crest that says “Colorado” with pick-axes and rays from the sun.

Cripple Creek Today

People still travel to Cripple Creek in Colorado’s Pike’s Peak Region to seek riches—only now it’s usually at a casino like Bronco Billy’s or the Brass Ass, instead of along a riverbed or in a dank underground mine shaft lit by fetid and sputtering oil lamps. There’s still element of the old day there, however, thanks to Cripple Creek’s beloved herd of donkeys. The mild-tempered burros are allowed to freely roam the streets from spring until fall, courtesy of the city’s Donkey Derby Days that was launched by local businessmen in 1931.
