Was This Coin Once Property of the Famous Newton Boys?
The Newton Boys were a criminal gang composed of brothers Willis, Joe, Jess and Wylie, who operated mostly in Texas during the 1920s. They and their associates robbed at least 60 banks and six trains during their criminal careers. The story of the Newton boys is so fantastic that Hollywood even made a film about them entitled The Newton Boys starring Matthew McConaughey as Willis “Skinny” Newton.
America’s Largest Railroad Heist
Their most famous caper took place on June 12, 1924, when the Newtons pulled off the biggest train robbery in United States history. After forcing a mail train to stop near Rondout, Illinois, the brothers made off with several sacks containing a whopping $3 million in cash and bonds! Could one of those sacks have held this 1924 Peace Silver Dollar? There’s no way to know, but you can let your imagination run with this Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) coin sealed in a custom 3" x 5" storycard holder.
COIN HIGHLIGHTS:
- NEARLY 100 YEARS OLD – Each coin in this offering is dated 1924, meaning they are nearly 100 years old! They come from the same year the famous Newton Brothers pulled off the biggest train robbery in United States history near Rondout, Illinois.
- FAMOUS PEACE SILVER DOLLAR – While not produced in the same numbers as the Morgan Silver Dollar, the Peace Silver Dollar series has seen its reputation grow with each passing year. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, it features a design of Lady Liberty on the obverse and a perched eagle on the reverse. It was struck from only 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935.
- STRUCK IN FINE SILVER – Each Peace Silver Dollar available here was struck at the Philadelphia Mint (no mint mark) in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% silver and measures 38.1 mm in diameter.
- LEGAL TENDER U.S. COINAGE – These coins were $1 legal tender in the United States and circulated widely during the Roaring ’20s and Depression-era ’30s.
- BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED CONDITION – Your 1924-P Peace Silver Dollar will come in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition.
- THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING PEACE DOLLAR – Despite millions of Peace Silver Dollars being struck from 1921 to 1935, most were lost in circulation or melted down in mass silver meltings. In fact, coin experts believe that only 16% of all Peace Dollars remain in existence today!
The greatest train robbery in American history didn’t take place during the Wild West era. It occurred during the Roaring ’20s and was the handiwork of the notorious Newton Boys. Let this 1924-dated Peace Silver Dollar transport back to that exciting era when the Newton Brothers terrorized money trains from Texas to Illinois!
