Could This Be A “Great Gatsby” Quarter?
In 1925, the classic book, The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, hit bookshelves. The main character, Jay Gatsby, was a wealthy socialite, but his big dream was to have a future with his one true love, Daisy Buchanan. This 1925 Standing Liberty Quarter is the type of coin that could have lined the shirt-pocket of Jay Gatsby. And now it can find its way into your collection.
The Short-Lived Standing Liberty Quarter
The Standing Liberty Quarter was a workhorse coin in the United States during World War I and through the Great Depression. Struck in 90% fine silver from 1916 to 1930, it initially caused quite a scandal as its design featured Liberty with an exposed breast. But as we went to war, Liberty donned a vest of chain mail that she would wear until the series’ end. While the Standing Liberty Silver Quarters were last struck in 1930, the coin wasn’t replaced until 1932. After striking no quarters at all in 1931 due to the Great Depression, the United States Mint struck a new 25-cent piece in 1932 with the introduction of the Washington Quarter. Intended as a one-year-only release to honor President George Washington’s 200th birthday, the commemorative proved so popular that it replaced the Standing Liberty Quarter and is still struck to this day.
