First-Year 1935 Voyageur Silver Dollar
Canada’s first circulating silver dollar bears a history unlike any other in numismatics. First struck in 1935 – the final year of the Peace Dollar, the last circulating United States silver dollar – the Voyageur Dollar was commissioned in celebration of King George V’s Silver Jubilee, or 25th year as king. The coin received its name from the iconic design of a pair of voyageurs, one a fur trader and the other a Native Canadian, guiding a canoe across open water in tribute to the fur trade, the industry that founded the nation. The coin’s imagery, evoking the nation’s vast, untamed frontier, made it one of the most popular coin designs ever struck in Canada.
The design, created by Canadian sculptor and artist Emanuel Hahn, lasted for than 50 years. It would have lasted even longer, but in 1986 the master dies that had been struck in Ottawa for an updated version were lost in transit to the Royal Canadian Mint’s facility in Winnipeg. An investigation into the mysterious disappearance found that the dies had been shipped by a local courier in an attempt to save a measly $43.50! Fearing that the dies had fallen into the hands of a gang of counterfeiters, the Mint changed the design, introducing the image of a loon on its dollar coins that still exists to this day.
