1971-S Eisenhower Dollar BU
Struck In 40% Silver: The First Ike Dollar
When Eisenhower dollars were released in 1971, they were the first U.S. Dollar coin struck in 36 years! In addition to the millions of standard copper-nickel versions that were commonly found in change, a small mintage of Ikes was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 40% silver exclusively for collectors. The mintage was so small that there were 38 times more “change” Ikes than these special Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) silver collector coins! In the 1980s, when silver reached $50 an ounce, many Silver Ikes were melted down by refiners for their silver. Nobody knows how many first-year Silver Ikes were lost to the melting pots, but experts estimate that hundreds of thousands of these big coins were lost forever during the frenzied silver rush.
A Stirring Tribute To “Ike”
The vivid memories of this big dollar are one of the reasons many people started collecting coins in the first place. On the obverse is the bust of Dwight David Eisenhower the nation’s 34th President and a United States Army Five-Star General who served as the Supreme Allied Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during World War II. The coin’s reverse is the same design as that from the insignia of the Apollo 11 mission that landed the first men on the moon. These two designs together pay tribute to one of America’s greatest presidents and one of the country’s greatest achievements all on one coin!
