Controversies Mar Olympic Games
After major boycotts to the 1980 and 1984 Summer Olympic Games, the 1988 Sumer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea featured participation from nearly every country. But that didn’t stop the controversies from affecting the games in a major way. Several major decisions stripped Gold Medals from American athletes, particularly in boxing where Roy Jones Jr. won every single round throughout the tournament until the final when he lost to South Korean fighter Park Si-Hun despite pummeling Park for three rounds and landing 86 punches to Park’s 32. Another U.S. fighter, Riddick Bowe, lost in the Gold Medal bout to Canadian future world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis as an East German referee penalized him for headbutts despite video evidence that proved it never happened. The referee later ruled Bowe out on a Technical Knockout and stopped the bout in a move that left commentators beside themselves in confusion.
American Highlights
The 1988 Summer Olympics was also the last Olympic Games in which the U.S. was represented by an all-amateur basketball team. The squad won the Bronze Medal after losing in the semi-finals to the Soviet Union, a team consisting of veteran professionals. By the end of the games, the Soviet Union was the run-away winner with 55 Gold Medals and 132 medals overall. East Germany was second with 37 Gold Medals and 102 medals overall, and the U.S. came in third with 36 Gold Medals and 94 medals overall. The highlights for the Americans included sprinter Florence Griffith Joyner, who won Gold in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes to go along with gold as a member of the 4×100-meter relay team. The Seoul Olympics also showcased the talents of American diver Greg Louganis, who won back-to-back Gold Medals on both diving events despite suffering a concussion after striking his head on the springboard during one of his dives.
