King David’s Cry For God’s Salvation

“But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: Thy blessing is upon Thy people. Selah.”

God’s Chastisement Of King David

Those words from the 3rd Psalm in the Book of Psalms were written by King David of Israel when he was on the run from his vengeful son, Absalom. It was at this time in David’s life that he was being chastised by God for seducing and impregnating Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite, an elite soldier in his army. To cover up his sin, David assigned Uriah to the front lines in the Siege of Rabba. Following Uriah’s death in battle, David made Bathsheba his wife and she bore Solomon, who David chose to be his heir over his other sons born by his previous wives. As one might imagine, Absalom did not take this bit of news very well and led an insurrection that plunged the kingdom into civil war and forced David to flee from Jerusalem. Besieged on all sides, David would ultimately triumph because he was God’s chosen one.

Many psalms are held with praises. More, however, cry out for God’s help. Psalm 3 is one such prayer. For religious scholars, this psalm represents a personal thanksgiving to God, who answered the prayer of an afflicted soul. It tells us to not only look at our own sins that have taken us captive but to surrender control to God and let Him work.
