2014 Baseball Clad Hall of Fame Half-Dollar Commemorative Proof
The U.S. Mint’s First-Ever Curved Series Hits a Home Run With Collectors
Never before had the United States Mint attempted something so daring. But if Mint officials were going to do something this dramatic, it only made sense to do it while honoring America’s favorite pastime. In 2014, the U.S. Mint introduced its first-ever curved series commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Baseball Hall of Fame. In a clever and instantly iconic design, the reverse features the outward curve of a baseball, while the obverse shows the inward curve of a baseball glove.
First And Only Curved Non-Precious Metal Coin
Unlike the other two coins of the program — a $5 gold coin and a Silver Dollar — this clad half dollar was not required to carry the now-famous domed shape. Not only did the U.S. Mint meet expectations for this commemorative half-dollar, but actually exceeded the requirements of the authorizing legislation! Today, this one-year-only clad half dollar still represents the first and only time that a national mint has ever produced a domed or curved shape coin struck in non-precious metal!
Limited-Edition Commemorative Baseball Proof Coins
Struck by the San Francisco Mint in 11.34 grams of copper-nickel, this coin also comes in gleaming Proof condition, meaning that it was expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields. When Congress passed legislation authorized the minting of these coins, it had set an edition limit of no more than 750,000 commemorative half dollars across both Proof and Uncirculated versions. Ultimately the San Francisco Mint produced just 249,049 of these coins in Proof condition.
Thanks to our connections in the coin world, we jumped at the chance when we were recently offered a small collection of these classic half dollars. This popular coin always sells quickly whenever it becomes available, so don’t strike out; hurry and catch yours while they last!
