The United States Mint introduced the Burnished Silver Eagle in 2006 on the bullion and proof versions' 20th anniversary. The coin has shared the same designs as the other versions of the Silver Eagle throughout its history. Like the other coins, each piece is struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver. Each piece bears the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint. The Silver Eagle Series received a new reverse design in the summer of 2021, dubbed the Type-2 design.
The final Burnished American Silver Eagle to feature the Type-1 design was released in 2020, which means the 2021-W Burnished American Silver Eagle will be the first Burnished Eagle to carry the new Type-2 design!
2021 marks the 15th anniversary of the original Burnished Silver Eagle. The series began in 2006 and ran through 2008 before being suspended for two years. Production resumed in 2011, and the coin has been an annual issue ever since.
The obverse will bear the Walking Liberty design that Adolph Weinman created for the half dollar. An American flag-draped Liberty carries laurel and oak branches as the morning sun emerges from beyond the horizon. The figure's name, "LIBERTY," is inscribed on this face, as are the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2021." The Type-2 design notably features Adolph Weinman's artist initials, "AW" for the first time in the series.
Emily Damstra, a member of the United States Mint's Artistic Infusion Program (AIP), designed, and Michael Gaudioso, a Mint employee, sculpted the new reverse design. An eagle carries an oak branch while spreading its wings to its side. Inscriptions along the rim are arranged differently than on the original coin but consist of the same information. They read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR," and "1 OZ. FINE SILVER." Just inside the inscription of the coin's weight is the statutory motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
The Type-2 design also includes an brand new security feature, a reeded edge gap to avoid counterfeiting.
