These South Dakota Goldbacks Will Put Some Gold Back In Your Collection
There’s a voluntary unit of local currency that exists in South Dakota called “Goldbacks,” 24-karat gold foil notes that are crafted in increments of 1/1000th of an ounce of highly pure 99.9% gold. Though not officially recognized by the United States government as legal tender, many local merchants and vendors are already accepting this new form if currency as payment. What’s more, they can be accepted in other states that allow the usage of these intriguing and beautifully designed notes.
Wafer-Thin Gold Foil Currency Notes
Each wafer-thin note is coated with a protective plastic cover so it can be circulated, exchanged, and used without the gold tearing. They’re meant to be used just like cash to purchase items. If you travel through South Dakota, you’ll probably even see signs that say “Goldbacks Accepted Here” to let you know these fractional gold units can be spent just like any other form of legal-tender currency. Anyone can own Goldbacks, even if they aren’t a resident of South Dakota.
Representations Of Allegorical Figures
Not only is each Goldback crafted in increments of 1/1000th of an ounce of pure gold (1 Aurum), but they are also fabulous examples of the engraver’s art—and the larger the denomination, the bigger the note. The design on each denomination features an allegorical depiction of one of the lady virtues and combines her with distinct symbols representing different aspects of South Dakota history and culture.
The 50 Aurum 1/20th-oz gold note offered here includes wording that says, “Specie Legal Tender Instrument” and features a design that shows Lady Libertas—Latin for Liberty. On this design, Liberty is shown resolutely marching into combat wielding a sword and a shield. On her shield are the words, “Under God the people rule,” the state motto of South Dakota. Other state landmarks appear in the design, including the dome of the State Capitol located in Pierre, needles formations formed by eroded granite pillars, towers, and spires, and Mount Rushmore, a national memorial centered on a colossal sculpture of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln that was carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills. The state fish, a walleye, is also shown with an angler casting for the tasty fish in one of the state’s lakes. A final admonishment is scrolled across the bottom of the note that reads, “Stand Fast in Liberty.”
