2023 Germania Mint 1-oz Silver Allegories – Germania & Galia Gem BU
2023 Germania Medal Honors Celebrates Franco-German Bond
The Germania Mint’s latest release in its Allegories series featuring its namesake Germania—Germany’s female personification similar to our Liberty or Great Britain’s Britannia—is back with a gorgeous new design for 2023. This new medal, the sixth—and final—issue in the series, not only features a youthful and vibrant Germania, but it pairs her with Galia, the female personification of France.
Germania & Galia Together: A Symbol Of Victory Over Occupying Forces
This medal offers a new take on Galia, the name of the allegorical figure of France when it was referred to as “Gaul” by the ancient Roman Empire. This release is meant to symbolize victory over occupying forces. Both Germany and France have a shared history that dates back before the time when Charlemagne The Great ruled much of western Europe, including both Germany and France. During Roman times both countries were at times conquered and controlled by the Roman Empire. Here both Galia and Germania stand together, joining their hands in a sign of victory. Their swords are sheathed symbolizing the peace they have won while the debris of the defeated Roman Empire lies beneath their feet. On the left, Galia is clad in a Roman breastplate and sandals that indicate the intermingling of cultures, enforced by the need to cooperate with the occupying power. In her hand she holds a Gaulish spear and on her head is a distinctive Gaulish diadem with wings. Germania’s head is adorned with an oak branch, and she holds a shield adorned with the image of a Germany’s iconic two-headed eagle.
Today the female personification of the French Republic is known as “Marianne,” who represents Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. During Roman times, Gaul was more than just an area encompassed by France. It consisted of present-day France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and parts of Switzerland, Germany, and Northern Italy. During Roman times both France and Germany were at times conquered and controlled by the Roman Empire. Since the Middle Ages, relations between the two nations have often pitted both against each other. More recently, there have been three grand periods between France and Germany since the late 19th Century. From 1871 to 1945 the period was known as “Hereditary Enmity.” From 1945 to 1963 the period became one of “Reconciliation.” Today’s current arrangement since 1963 is called the “Special Relationship” of Franco-German Friendship that has evolved into a united front resulting in the fall of the Iron Curtain and the rise and advancement of the European Union.
