2024 Marks The 250th Anniversary Of The First Continental Congress
The First Continental Congress was a meeting of delegates from 12 of the 13 British colonies that eventually became the United States. It met in 1774 from September 5 to October 26 at Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, following the British Navy’s blockade of Boston Harbor and the Intolerable Acts passed by the Parliament of Great Britain in response to the Boston Tea Party in December 1773. This beautiful silver coin captures the moment when Virginia’s Patrick Henry spoke to the delegates as depicted in a mural painted in 1974 by American artist Allyn Cox (1896–1982). During the two-month-long session, delegates formally declared that colonists should have the same rights as Englishmen and agreed to form the Continental Association, which called for the suspension of trade with Great Britain unless Parliament rescinded the Intolerable Acts. Within six months following the end of the gathering, armed conflict broke out on American soil.
