Silver Britannia Coins Made From World War II-Era Shipwreck Treasure
During World War II, the Imperial Japanese Navy deployed several submarines to the Indian Ocean in an attempt to disrupt Allied shipping between Europe and the Dutch East Indies. Among those ships that were sunk was the SS Tilawa, an ocean liner owned by the British India Steam Navigation Company. The 10,000-ton steam passenger liner was torpedoed and sunk by Japanese submarine Matsu on November 23, 1942 while in route from Bombay, India to Durban, South Africa. In addition to 280 people killed in the attack, more than 2,300 bars of silver bullion were lost. This silver was on its way to the South African Mint where it was to be struck into coinage. Today, that silver cargo is valued at more than $43 million and was at the center of a legal battle between salvagers and the government of South Africa.
Authentic Silver Bullion From The Wreck Of The SS Tilawa
Nicknamed the “Indian Titanic” in reference to its great loss of life similar to the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912, the Tilawa and its treasure was discovered by marine salvagers in 2017. Now, gleaming Britannia coins made from the original silver bullion bars recovered from the shipwreck are being made available to a discerning public looking for a connection to an actual event from World War II.
Here you can secure a legal-tender £2 Britannia coin struck in a Troy ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver that not only features the traditional image of Britannia, the ancient warrior queen who defended Great Britain’s shores from invasion and oppression, but also displays a special Tilawa privy mark to denote the fact that the silver in the coin’s planchet was made from authentic sunken treasure bars recovered from the ship. The circular mark feature an anchor with “S.S. TILAWA” above and the “19” and “42” of the 1942 date of the Tilawa’s sinking divided by the anchor’s shank.
The Iconic Symbol Of Britain
The embodiment of a nation and icon of maritime sovereignty, Britannia has symbolized Britain for centuries, appearing on coins dating all the way back to the Roman Empire. More recently, her name and image have graced the United Kingdom’s Britannia bullion coin series since 1987. Philip Nathan’s design of Britannia standing unwaveringly on a wind-swept shore, trident in one hand with branch and shield in the other, won “Coin of the Year” honors for its debut. Originally intended as a gold bullion series, the Silver Britannia coins were added to the annual production 10 years later in 1997 with the same breathtaking design—the same design that appear here on this special Tilawa Privy Marked coin struck from actual silver bullion recovered from the famous shipwreck!
