Silver Krugerrand Coins Made From World War II-Era Shipwreck Treasure
During World War II, the Imperial Japanese Navy deployed several submarines to the Indian Ocean in an attempt to disrupt Allied shipping between Europe and the Dutch East Indies. Among those ships that were sunk was the SS Tilawa, an ocean liner owned by the British India Steam Navigation Company. The 10,000-ton steam passenger liner was torpedoed and sunk by Japanese submarine Matsu on November 23, 1942 while in route from Bombay, India to Durban, South Africa. In addition to 280 people killed in the attack, more than 2,300 bars of silver bullion were lost. This silver was on its way to the South African Mint where it was to be struck into coinage. Today, that silver cargo is valued at more than $43 million and was at the center of a legal battle between salvagers and the government of South Africa.
Authentic Silver Bullion From The Wreck Of The SS Tilawa
Nicknamed the “Indian Titanic” in reference to its great loss of life similar to the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912, the Tilawa and its treasure was discovered by marine salvagers in 2017. Now, gleaming Krugerrand coins made from the original silver bullion bars recovered from the shipwreck are being made available to a discerning public looking for a connection to an actual event from World War II.
Here you can secure a legal-tender 1 Rand Krugerrand coin struck in a Troy ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver that not only features the traditional image of Krugerrand, former South African President Paul Kruger on one side and the iconic Springbok antelope on the other, but also displays a special Tilawa privy mark to denote the fact that the silver in the coin’s planchet was made from authentic sunken treasure bars recovered from the ship. The mark is a small image of the ship with “SS TILAWA 1942” engraved below it.
South Africa’s Famous Silver Krugerrand
The name “Krugerrand” has been synonymous with wealth, prosperity, and riches for more than 50 years. First issued in 1967, the South African Gold Krugerrand holds the title of being both the world’s first modern gold bullion coin AND the most widely traded gold coin on the planet, inspiring similar gold bullion series around the globe. However, while other countries had produced silver versions of their bullion coins, collectors had only dreamed of owning official Krugerrand coins as pure silver bullion coins—that is, until 2018, when the South African Mint introduced its very first Silver Krugerrand with a Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) finish! Now that same design appears here on this special Tilawa Privy Marked coin struck from actual silver bullion recovered from the famous shipwreck!
