Honoring The Artistry Of George T. Morgan

George T. Morgan is among the most celebrated names in the world of American Numismatics. His Lady Liberty design on the Morgan Silver Dollar remains as iconic as ever more than a century after its last minting. This set celebrates his contributions by showcasing two coins featuring his work—a 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar and an 1892–1893 Columbian Exposition Half Dollar.

  • 1892–1893 COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION HALF DOLLAR – The first United States commemorative half dollar, the Columbian Exposition Half Dollar was minted for the Chicago Columbian Exposition in 1893, the huge World's Fair held to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the voyage of Columbus to America. Struck in 1892 and 1893 (date our choice), the coin features the bust of Columbus designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber. The reverse shows Morgan’s design of Columbus’s flagship, Santa Maria, and two globes representing the Old and New Worlds. It was struck in struck in 12.5 grams of highly pure 90% silver and measures 30.6 mm in diameter. Only 1.5 million coins were ever struck, and most were heavily circulated and later melted.
  • 1921 MORGAN SILVER DOLLAR – The 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar is the final date of the series, which was replaced by the Peace Silver Dollar the same year. The Morgan Silver Dollar—so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan—has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878-1904 and again in 1921. Morgan’s historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. It was struck in struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% silver and measures 38.1 mm in diameter. While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence.

When 30-year-old George T. Morgan arrived at the U.S. Mint in 1876, he was already an accomplished coin designer, having previously worked as an assistant at the British Royal Mint. He quickly rose through the ranks and ultimately served as the Mint’s seventh Chief Engraver from 1917 to 1925. Each coin in this special 1892–1921 50₵ & $1 George T. Morgan Two-Piece Set will arrive in Extremely Fine (XF) condition and housed a custom-designed 3" x 5" storycard. Act now!
