Pieces of History Tied to the Tragic Sinking of the RMS Titanic

The unimaginable sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 14, 1912 has been immortalized in books and movies. What we have here are two authentic, circulated paper stock certificates tied forever to that heartbreaking event.

  • One certificate was issued from the 1920s to the 1940s and represents ownership in J.P. Morgan’s International Mercantile Marine Company, the organization that owned the Titanic. Despite being registered as a British ship, the Titanic was part of the famous White Star Line that was purchased by American tycoon, John Pierpont Morgan through his International Mercantile Marine Company in 1902! The stock certificate shows a massive Titanic-style ship departing for a long ocean voyage.
  • The other certificate issued from the 1910s to the 1930 represents ownership in the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of America, which provided the only source of communication on the Titanic that fateful night. In fact, the crew of the SS Carpathia heard the Titanic’s desperate cry for help over its wireless telegraph after the collision with the iceberg. Though the Carpathia braved the same dangerous seas that caused the Titanic to hit an ice burg, the distance was too great. More than 1,500 people aboard the Titanic perished, though Carpathia was able to rescue 705 people from lifeboats. The stock certificate features a vignette showing a female figure holding aloft a sword and scales flanked by globes and radio antennae.

It’s no stretch to say that the story of the Titanic’s sinking still reverberates today more than a century later. Now you can hold a pair of pieces directly tied to that epic tragedy with this 1910–1949 Marconi-International Mercantile Marine Stock Two-Piece Set.
